Solution Overview
The Measure and Grow approach is used by SAFe enterprises to assess their progress towards achieving Business Agility and determining actionable improvements. Business Agility sets elevated performance standards for organizations, demanding swift and effective responses to emerging business opportunities. However, to enhance speed and agility, leaders, teams, and business stakeholders need a reliable method for measuring the current state and identifying avenues for improvement. Thus, the selection of what and how to measure becomes a critical driver for continuously enhancing business performance.
Flow measurements serve the purpose of gauging an organization's efficiency in delivering value. The Flow Framework introduces five metrics designed to quantify various facets of flow. Given that SAFe operates as a system centered around flow, each of these metrics finds direct relevance. Furthermore, SAFe introduces the concept of Flow Predictability, a yardstick for evaluating how Teams, Agile Release Trains, and Solution Trains fulfill their intended business value in alignment with predetermined goals.
The solution enables a set of reports to measure the performance of a SAFe Agile Release Trains.
Flow Distribution
Flow distribution measures the quantity of each work type within the system over a period. This can encompass the equilibrium between new business Features compared to Enabler ones, as well as the efforts invested in defect resolution and risk mitigation (Technical Debt).
Flow Velocity
Number of completed work items over a time period compared to average Velocity of the Agile Release Train:
Flow Time
It shows how much time it takes for every step in a process, showing how well the whole system is working.
Flow Load
The report shows a how number of work items currently in progress (active or waiting) changing over time:
Flow Efficiency
Ratio of the total time spent in value-added work activities divided by the total flow time:
Flow Predictability
The report show how consistently Agile Release Trains are able to meet their commitments:
