Brief summary of this article:
Why is Apptio migrating Targetprocess tenants to AWS? And what are the benefits to customers?
Apptio is migrating the Targetprocess application from IBM Public Cloud to AWS, in order to realize the benefits of the AWS cloud platform. This includes hosting the Targetprocess application on a managed infrastructure that leverages Apptio’s extensive experience with Kubernetes on AWS. This move will also enable Apptio to improve the geographic alignment of customer data.
Are there any risks associated with migration?
We believe this is a low-risk activity. Apptio has fully tested the migration and rollback process. We anticipate the migration will have no impact on your daily use of Apptio Targetprocess.
Is there a rollback plan if issues are encountered?
Should an issue arise during migration, Apptio will roll back the migration. No customer action will be required. A new migration date will be communicated once any issues have been resolved.
If a rollback is deemed necessary after the conclusion of the migration maintenance window, there may be data loss for any activities performed after the migration. As a result, Apptio will endeavor to resolve post-migration issues within the new AWS environment and without a rollback.
What is the schedule for migration?
Targetprocess applications will be migrated in weekly batches. Information about the day of your migration will be sent in advance.
Tasktop application will be migrated on 02 September 2023 (EU cluster) and 14 October 2023 (US cluster).
Maintenance windows for the weekdays:
- AU cluster 14:00 - 18:00 CET (the next day 00:00 - 04:00 AEDT)
- US cluster 10:00 - 13:00 CET (04:00-07:00 EST / 01:00-04:00 PST)
- EU cluster 6:00-07:00 and 20:00-24:00 CET
Maintenance window for the weekend: 9:00 - 20:00 СЕТ / 03:00 - 14:00 EST / 00:00 - 11:00 PST
Does the migration include validation steps?
Manual pre-migration validation is performed at the start of each batch as part of a go/no-go decision step.
Will there be downtime associated with this migration?
Migration downtime is expected to be up to one hour for weekday migrations and up to 8 hours for weekend migrations.
What is your communications plan? When will I be notified of my migration date/time?
A scheduling communication will be sent in advance to inform you of your migration date. You can expect to receive notice of your scheduled date between 2 and 4 weeks in advance. Apptio will strive to provide as much advance notice as feasible for customers in each weekly batch. Administrators will also receive in-app reminder notifications as your migration date approaches.
Will you provide updates on status and success/failure during the migration?
No communication is planned during the migration unless Apptio encounters an issue requiring us to roll back. If an issue occurs which interferes with the migration and we are unable to correct it during the maintenance window, the migration activity will be rolled back to ensure the tenant remains accessible and fully functional. Apptio will then evaluate the issue to find a resolution, and then re-schedule the migration for a later date.
If no communication is received following your migration, you may assume your tenant was successfully migrated and is available and ready for use.
How will migrations be performed? How will you ensure my data is kept secure and whole?
The existing data and authentication details will automatically be migrated to the AWS cloud as part of this migration.
Will you allow customers to request a reschedule of their migration date, or to remain on the current cloud platform?
The IBM cloud platform will be decommissioned by the end of 2023, so we are unable to accommodate requests to stay on the current platform. If you have concerns about the timing, or would like to discuss another aspect of this migration, please contact your Apptio account manager or submit a support case.
What can I do to prepare my tenant environment for migration? Will anything change in AWS?
IP address of the server will be changed
The AWS architecture does not support whitelisting of specific IP addresses for Apptio services. AWS has published the IP ranges in use for all of their clusters. The pool of IP addresses that must be whitelisted is available here (if you don't have a user in the community yet, please request access at https://community.apptio.com/home/request-community-access)
Auth links will be changed
Auth URL is cluster-specific and looks like this:
You are redirected to Auth URL if you're not yet logged in to Targetprocess:
Please plan to update any saved bookmarks which may be pointing to such URLs. All the bookmarks should use Account URL and not Auth URL.
Account URL will NOT be changed
The account URL has a format {accountName}.tpondemand.com and will not be changed by the migration.
SSO exception URL will be changed
Customers who have SSO enabled have the ability to use the login form to authenticate users from the exceptions list bypassing SSO. There is a special URL that allows accessing this form.
The new URL can be found after the migration in Targetprocess at Settings → Authentication and Security → SSO.
Please note:
The notification feed, which includes the historical in-app notifications, will not be available for a 14-day period after the migration.
Users can still expect the notification system to function as usual moving forward. After the migration is completed, new in-app notifications will continue to be delivered and displayed correctly.
